I was researching the Rockefeller Habits when I stumbled across this:
1. Have a handful of rules.
2. Repeat yourself a lot.
3. Act consistently with those rules.
I recognised it instantly. It was my philosophy as a parent to only have a few rules.
I sounded like a stuck record most of the time, repeating myself again and again. And for the most part, I acted consistently with those rules.
I once asked a female senior manager at work what it was like to have a large team. Guess what she said?
“It’s just like organising a family. Have a handful of rules, repeat yourself often and stick to the rules.”
Of course that is not all there is to it! But what a great place to start.
A simple formula to use whether you are raising children, managing a department or running a business.
What can YOU take away from it?
- Where can you simplify your rules?
- What does your staff need to hear again and again? Your clients? Your suppliers?
- Are you acting consistently with those rules?
